Our Story

Founded in May of the year 2001, Rome’s ARES Military Bookstore , the only firm specializing in military history in the capital and one of the very few in Italy, has long been an established cultural institution and a rallying point for teachers, students and devotees of the subject.
One of the dreams in the drawer of the owner, Raffaele D’Aniello, esteemed American Indian historian and author of Little Big Horn. Il popolo dei Sioux contro Custer (Rome, Erre Emme, 1995), of the mighty Dizionario degli Indiani D’America, (Rome Newton & Compton, 1999) and immediately become a classic, and of Toro Seduto, una biografia, (Milan, Rizzoli 2021) was to be able to create a point of reference for all those people who, passionate about historical studies, with particular reference to the war events of every era and country, did not know how to easily find books and magazines in Rome on their favorite subjects. After a short period of gestation and planning, the Ares Military Bookstore, the first and only bookstore specializing in military history books in the capital city, was born. The topics covered were immediately among the most varied with a special emphasis on the great wars of the 20th century: in front of them all the Great War, “the useless slaughter” as it was called by Pope Benedict XV, followed by World War II and all those that bloodied the end of the century. Following the succession of History that never dies, contrary to what foolish and unprejudiced historians claimed, the library dealt, with depth of cultural and material investment, with the violent, continuous wars that bloodied the first decades of the new millennium. The contemporary era sees the Library grappling with new horizons of warfare, which has now reached the heart of Europe and is ready to knock even on our doors.
Provided with a vast and highly selected library holdings of more than 25 thousand volumes, it offers interested parties extremely varied and first-rate study and documentation materials, thanks to a careful and constant selection of its ever-growing catalog.
Raphael D’Aniello, the proprietor, has always been passionate about the history and technique of warfare understood as a foundational expression of human affairs; he has collected prestigious authors, scholars of rank and serious amateurs, in the best sense of the term, who, over time have reasoned, written and taught on themes and issues that constitute almost a front row seat to the understanding of men and peoples, states and nations.

Historical events, technological acquisitions, social and anthropological experiences, which, in spite of the mystifying temperament of these days, which professes to be open and civilized, is, in reality, a form, dangerous, well-orchestrated and not even too disguised censorship of obscurantism, which, in the name of a pretended goodness preclude study and understanding.
Therefore, with its rich fund, the Ares Military Bookshop in Rome, has never kept to the mere theme of war, but has constantly enriched itself with works on political, social, cultural, and technical subjects intended to explain the nature and reasons for the war phenomenon, its protagonists and its victims, showing itself open to every direction of study, without ideological preclusions.
Moreover, it has not limited itself to the acquisition and sale of valuable book works, but has seen fit, so to speak, to throw itself into the fray, making itself the publisher of a contained but authoritative catalog of works of lofty scholarly value, such as the volumes on the History of the War in the Pacific by Prof. Alberto Santoni, or texts of high popularity, which current publishing would not hold in worthy regard.
Equally, the Ares Military Library in Rome did its best, at least in the early years of its life, to organize lectures of the most diverse topics entrusted to academics, conservators of public collections, and talented experts. He procured publications and documentation used for screenplay writing and filming. He purchased entire libraries, acquiring, among other things, works that are now unobtainable.
Always open to new technologies, Rome’s Libreria Militare Ares, now equipped with a very modern and highly accessible Internet site, is ready to take up the challenge of modernity, flanking its traditional on-site sales with an increasingly efficient online business, which intends to reach out to enthusiasts in the territory and also propose itself on the international market, which has proven to be very responsive in the matter of out-of-print, rare or antiquarian books.
Therefore, the Ares Military Bookshop in Rome, which has always considered its patrons, more than ordinary customers, passionate friends, invites them all to visit the premises or to consult the website, because military history, still a niche of a niche, is actually the story of all of us; and to disperse it because of preconceptions would be for anyone the irreparable loss of the past and the senseless rejection of the essential foundations of the future.
